WOODWARD - SOULE - Mr. Henry Woodward,
rancher, of Alberni and Miss Mary Soule, eldest daughter of Cornelius J. Soule, architect,
were joined in marriage last night. Rev. Dr. Wilson, of the Reformed Episcopal Church,
performed the ceremony. The bride was given away by her father and was attended by her
sister, Miss Annie Soule, as bridesmaid. The groom was supported by Mr. A. Maxwell Muir.
After the ceremony the company adjourned to the dining room, where a splendid dinner was
provided, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The happy couple leave this morning for
Alberni, their new home. |
It would be very interesting to know
how Henry met and courted the 21 year old May, how he convinced her to leave the
comparative comfort of city life for a home in the wilderness and also how he won over her
parents. Also, I speculate that A.
Maxwell Muir, acted as groomsman, as a favour to May's father, a
fellow architect and likely friend. I would suspect that Henry had few friends, if
any, of his own in Victoria. |

Henry Woodward, the second son of John (1821-1886) and Mary (Crompton) (1836-1924)
Woodward, was born in Lower Beach, Macclesfield, Cheshire, Engand, Dec 3, 1868. He
left home when he was 18 and crossing the ocean and the continent ended up on Vancouver
Island. In the Fall of 1887 he trekked North from Victoria and then across country
from Nanaimo and arrived in the Alberni Valley. Seeing the potential of the area he
elected to stay and endure a lonely existence carving a farm out of the wilderness and
living off of what he could shoot and find until things were up and running. In 1899 at the age of 30 odd years, Henry retraced his steps
to Victoria, on horseback, to find a bride to take back with him ... or so the story
goes.
Henry "Harry", had 6 sisters; Maude
(1857-1945), Adelaide (1861-1944), Emily (1862-1924), Mary (1863-1924), Rosamund
(1866-1903) and Norah (1870-????) and three brothers; John Cother (1867-1937), Ralph (1871
-????) and Frances (1872-????)
Henry's sister Adelaide (1861-1944) married
Victoria florist, A. J. Woodward. They lived in a large home in the High Quadra area
on top of a hill with wonderful gardens all around. |
